Having spectated for a change I was really impressed. Once the restarts were over with and everyone got into a rythym, it was amazing how the front runners worked together to get away from the pack. The top 4 cars of Varacins, Steibenhauler, Jennerhjohn and Blanarik put their heads down and dropped 2 seconds a lap relative to the rest of the field culminating in all four going into the 2:41's with Chris Jennerjahn getting a track record with a 2.40938.
Our first timers, Toad Hallow and Gavin did a great job of adjusting to the highest level of vee racing in the world to compete and finish very respectfully. I remember just wanting to finish to be able to call the week a success and getting the results they got was just fantastic. Congrats to all our West Coast guys, here's to 2013. Anything that's easy, is probably not worth doing.

The Sunday morning replay is up on Speedcasttv.com if you missed the race. Anyone know why Dennis spun in lap 1? You couldn't see it in the video.

He had to replace both cracked rear drums shortly before the race and experienced a rear wheel lock up going into turn 1.

A blue car was off drivers right in 5 on our video so I assume that was him. Later in the race when he passed Gav he was blowing a lot of oil too (can see it in the video). I assumed that was part of his "off" but perhaps not

I was there the entire week and have to say that I had a great time and hope to go next year. I would recommend that if at all possible you should attend next year as a driver, crew or spectator.
I did the track walk on Tuesday morning (that is - instead of trying the "Beat-the-Boss" run). I was taking pics and looking at lines and curbs and all things interesting on the track; did the whole track in about 1:35:00. You start to get a sense for how big the place really is. There is so much camping/pit space that it can take several minutes to get to pregrid even if you are in a car!
I also had the opportunity to meet many of the Vee drivers who were very friendly, and willing to spend some time chatting, answering questions and let you look at their car.
I did see that many Vees were hitting 111 MPH heading into T5 when drafting other cars that were typically 3 to 4 MPH slower - I had previously been told that it would be 107 MPH.
I agree with Bruce that it was cold, but dressing in layers and having a nice warm jacket and gloves helped a lot. I think a couple of days were warm enough for shirt sleeves, but not for very long. We were lucky in that the real rain happened at night, but the track was dry the following morning.
The race was everything it should be, good competition throughout the field. More enjoyable than several other classes that either had much lower car counts or a wide range of speed differential between the competitors.
-Jim
PS: Kim, I enjoyed meeting you too. Hopefully we will make the race at Buttonwillow.

Surely they're faster than 111? I have seen 115 in both Portland and Seattle. I think some guys are hitting 120+ going into Canada.

Yes, they probably were faster going into Canada corner (T12). The 111 MPH was what was shown on the board inside T5. We did hear of higher speeds for other classes entering T12 than at T5.
Yes Kim, that is correct. Makes you wonder how so many cars got through T1 unscathed. Bob Bowe took a lot of pictures in a number of classes in T1 and elsewhere around the track (CSR, DSR and SRF that I have seen so far). I met him and our paths crossed many times over the time I was there; another real nice guy!

Bruce,
Nice job on the video. Any more good footage?
Was there any damage to Ron's car as a result of that contact? Not obvious from the footage... I'm glad Ron was able to get out of that mess so quickly.
