Thought I'd reply to this thread from the "other side".
I recently made the decision to stop racing cars, and I sold my Vee. I stopped mostly because of the money involved, but that turned out to be not the whole truth. I could've still afforded to race a couple of weekends per year, until I got a handle on our new house payments.
The real reasons I stopped:
1. Combining FF, SF, F500, FV and sometimes Spec Racers. There are too many classes in the SCCA, and it was a 50/50 shot at getting screwed by a Ford/F500 during the race. Sure, I learned to get super aggressive with a slow Ford so that I didn't get shed from the lead pack, but I don't like bumping wheels with other formula cars.
2. Uncertainty that the current FV spec would still be around by the time I have more money. Who wants to sit on a $8000 car for a few years and find that it's worth $1000 when ready to race again? I didn't want to take that chance.

Just looked at the poll and saw we have a "Devil's Avacado" on the board who thinks that the class is viable. That person wanna fess up and gives their reasoning or are they just doing it to annoy? I would not put that past some of the guys I know in the class! ;D

I will go with all your reasons save the last, rules changes in this class move in geological time.
We miss yer smilin' face bud...there are a lot of good cars still available out there!

Your ears must have been burning man as there is much talk of marshalling a cadre of Elves to sally forth (or fifth) and high off to Redwood City for to prep your car for you. Then there is the surgical strike required to snag you and you family and drag them to THill...it was all Jeff's Idea!

The yes vote was me. But it was an accident, I swear. I was multitasking, and hit the Yes before I realized it was the wrong choice. I don't know how to change it to No, which is my real answer. That'll teach me to do 3 things at once.
As for my car, I haven't even looked at it in 6 months. I hope it hasn't been reapportioned, Brooklyn-style, while it's been up on blocks in Ron's shop.

Hello hello, I'm a newbie to this board so sorry for bringing up an old topic. But, as a FV newbie as well I figured maybe my thought process ( or lack of) might be of interest.
First off, I'm not an SCCA member. So no loyalty or hatred for SCCA. I bought the Vee with the intent of running with Pro Auto Sports for eight months to get seat time then go to the SCCA drivers school. Pro Auto Sports is the only group in the Phoenix area that runs open wheel cars besides the SCCA. So, after three races running against FF, Club Fords, FA, FM, Firsts and FC's (no other Vee's) I'm feeling everything is right on track. Running good, car's great. Then one day the SCCA and PASA run Firebird the same day, us (PASA) on the main and SCCA on the east track at Firebird. I was excited to find out what the "real" FV guys are running for lap times so I can compare times. (That's where we ran the first two months.) It was a Regional event....no vee's. One FM and a couple of Atlantics. I go home to start searching the SCCA results archives and notice a trend. Nobody runs Vee's in the Regionals, only the Nationals. I make some phone calls, sure enough .." we don't run regionals because of the groupings. So we only run Nationals" was the overwhelming response I heard. So now, I have to wonder what's the point in "racing" a vee in SCCA. Sure, I can go do laps and run blocker for the FA and FM's guys and even for Stan Townes in a FF for a year but what fun is that? I don't even have a SCCA license yet and I have to run nationals to race other vees! I want to race other Vee's. If I just stay in PASA (which is a great bunch of folks) I can duke it out with the Club Fords and even beat some, but at Firebird Main, PIR, Sandia and California Speedway I'll be at the back of the pack again because of the straights. No fun. I want to race, and open wheel racecars are the only real race cars to me. The vee is what I can afford and is where my excess money goes and if I'm going to spend it, it has to be quality time, not just "I drive a race car around a track" time. Of course if someone would trade me a CFF for a Vee..... I guess my point is....lack of regional support is killing the Vee class, well probably every class actually. From what I hear, maybe Topeka will get everyone off of the "National only" bug and bring them back to regional "for the fun of it" racing.

It depends on the Area. Here in the San Fran region our Regional groups are much larger than the National. This Weekend at T-hill we have only 20 running and next month another Regional we are expecting 30. We run the same grouping as the Nationals ( Fords and 500's ) although these next three races two of which we will be running by ourselves. Like I said it depends on the area.

If you want to race with larger fields of FV, the look no further than VARA. You can race a modern FV with us, but you are untimed and unscored. It is better if you have an older FV. Go to vararacing.com. We even get to Phoenix once a year or so.
