Before the next event, Laguna will have an open test day (on Thursday). This is a rare occurrence and anyone looking to get faster should consider this. I can count on one hand the number of times Laguna has had a open test day prior to a race.
On another note, I just received the new issue of SportsCar (June 2010), and on page 20, Pobst has a good article on "How to get Lapped" without costing either driver too much time. Worth the read. BTW, I am mentioned in the article in section 3. This is a section on holding your line while being lapped and not making any sudden changes so that the overtaking driver can plan to go by you based on you behaving normally. A lot of us fail to realize how far back an overtaking car plans a pass on a car in a slower class. Pobst then mentions me by saying "Late moves put you in Harm's way." It's great to be famous, even Pobst knows of me!! LOL dave (a wanna be racer)

Great advice Dave! It appears that we will be at Laguna, so anyone wanting a video of the 3 tracks we typically race on is welcome to stop by and get a DVD. I'll bring a stack of blanks, but if you bring your own that's fine as well.
As much as I admire Tom Duncan, his video is not necesarily a great instructional tool. There are numerous "banzai/Hail Mary" passes where he is betting that the driver he is passing (in the dirt mostly) will see and avoid contact. Mike Bernstein didn't and they had contact. All that risk went into the crapper at that point. Then did the same thing with Eric Costa. Not great.
There are some laps where he was all alone before the first contact that are great though.

I tend to feel the same way as Greg about this; was kind of surprised this video was posted. Also figured that Tom probably had a LONG chat with the stewards afterwards... You can also guess that Mike B. and Eric C. weren't that happy with him either.

When I posted this video I said it might not be super useful because of all the "banzai/Hail Mary" stuff that happened. I was hoping that the couple of clean laps would be in a tiny way helpful, i wasn't encouraging putting wheels off at the start and wheel-to-wheel contact

Just to follow up what Ethan said, hiring a driving coach is invaluable. You guys have one of the top vee drivers in the country local to you in Brian McCarthy. He coached me for my first national race in May of 2007 in Portland. I went four seconds faster in one day. It is better than a set of tires and the cost was not much different from what I paid for the Hoosiers.
I also HIGHLY recommend buying a camera system. You will see amazing things about your line by reviewing the footage. It also gives you proof that it really wasn't YOUR fault. It was the other guy..... :-)

My best wishes to everyone on this Memorial Day weekend. I traded a few emails with Shannon at Thunderhill this week about renting the track for a day. I have a quote to rent the track but it doesn't add up to me, particularly how marque clubs and NCRC charge for their events.. Has anyone ever rented the track before for testing/non competitive event? I would appreciate your perspective. Thanks, Dan Wise

Many organizations besides SCCA have test days before their event. Joining another group to share a test day can be cost effective. I believe CSRG has a test day before their weekends, don't know if they'll share with a current car. I know they come to our test days.
