New to the forum, formula racing and the SCCA. I am currently in process of getting my SCCA license and also looking at racing in Formula Vee or Formula First later in the year. I have experience with many track days in my 240z and also have completed a couple of Skip Barber Formula courses. Before I start driving with SCCA though I wanted to attend a few events and learn more about the class, people, cars and how events are run. I am looking to crew for someone, provide an extra set of hands or help out where possible so that I can learn more. If anyone would be willing to show me around and introduce me to Formula Vee/First I would be really grateful. I know there are events coming up in March and plan to attend but would be great if I could also get some hands on experience with what a race event entails from the crew side of things.

I am located in Santa Clara. I have driven Thunderhill, Sears Point and Laguna Seca. I am most familiar with Thunderhill and Laguna Seca.

Well, check out the region schedule: www.sfrscca.org/images/2014/2014schedule1_2_14.pdfPretty much any of those events will feature a pack of Formula Vee's in a small compound in the paddock. Vee guys tend to paddock together to share parts and beer/food at the end of the day. We won't debate the merits of Formula First vs. Formula Vee here, but put simply, Formula First is not popular on the West Coast. I might (playing devil's advocate here) advise you to look at Club Ford as well. Because regardless of class, you'll spend the same amount on entry fees, hotels, travel, etc if you run a FV or a FA. Just something to consider. Either way, all the small formula car SCCA guys are pretty friendly. Come out and say hello, ask lots of questions, and don't be surprised if you get 16 different answers for each question. Undoubtedly by the end of the weekend you'll have made enough new friends to bring you along for a whole season's worth of crew experience. Good luck-

Since you are in Santa Clara, you should get to know Ron Chuck. His shop is in Redwood City at 375 Convention Way. He is there most days. I have a shop on the other side of his and there are a few FV's there. Just come to any race and the group will gladly put you to work. I'll PM you his phone number.

As others have said there are lots of great information available from a visit to the track. Since the runoffs are at Laguna this year there will be some very experienced, and knowledgeable, drivers showing up. I have been racing FV for 33 years and my son, who will be doing most of the driving this year, has been racing for 5 years. I also have built two FST's and should have my latest FST out sometime this spring. FST has started off slowly here on the west coast but it has the potential to be a great class. IMO FV will evolve into FST at some point.
Come by and say hi when you get to the track.

Hey all, thank you all for the response and food for thought. I am going to try and tag up with Ron Chuck at his shop. I also plan to be at some of the SCCA events in march and see the various classes. Hope to see you all at the track soon.
