Problem: I have a 25 lb battery that sits over the front axel in my vintage RCA. This causes the front end to drag on the track when braking (when using soft Carrera shocks). I have been forced to used way stiff "stock" front shocks that only gets the outside wheel to grip...
Question: Gel batteries are also heavy and I have very limited room to move my battery to, say, in front of my seat.. Fire bottle space limitations...
Remedy? This is where I need help... Interstate batteries has a Mat Glass 14 Amp Hr. 12 Lb. 6"x8"x3" cell at a cost of $50.00
Thoughts?
Thanks, Gus

The batteries we use are gels 12v 18 amps and I don't think they weigh more than 10 lbs. The dimensions are approx. 7.5X5.5X3.5. We get them through Ron Chuck. right now he is at Mid-Ohio, but will be back on Mon. Not too sure of the cost. The advantage of these type of Batteries are they can mount in any position, and last a long time. The last one we used for 5 seasons before we had to replace it.

Thanks guys for your response. Further thinking has taken me to a new question of, How many amp hours are required for a 30 min. run (ie: what is the draw of the coil during a practice or race session?) + starting to get to pregrid + starting at the 3 min. time to race.
Who did the math to come up with an 18ah minimum size?

Gus;
I use the battery that Bruce mentioned above and I know for a fact that it actually weighs 15 lbs (Yeah Bruce, I couldn't believe it either!).
Although it is NOT recommended I have run entire weekends on a single charge. A VW engine can run for an amazing amount of time on a total dischage system, all the power is eaten up running the starter.

We carry the Panasonic Gel as rated above and it is a great unit. It weighs 13 lbs. (47.95 + shipping). www.sracing.com/miscproducts.htmWe have been using them for at least 2 years in our cars and been selling them for the same length of time. As far as I know we have never had a failure. If I remember correctly the 009 with Blue coil runs at about a 3 ampere hour draw. Cranking is about a 50+ ah draw but of course hopefully you only do it for under 20 seconds the full weekend. We always charge after each session. If your starter motor and engine are working correctly, a full charge will easily last the weekend. However, a full (float) charge on the battery most of the time keeps sulfation to a minimum and thus battery life at a maximum. Jim SR
