Hello Everyone! First post here. My name is Daryl DeArman. I race a caldwell D-13 with VARA. We are allowed the choice of two different tires: Vintage Dunlops or American Racers. Our choice of tires will determine which class the zero roll cars compete in. Currently I am on Dunlops. After this season I am considering switching classes and tires to American Racers. A couple of questions: Is the consensus that I will NEED a long box if going with the shorter tires? The dunlop rears I run are 22.8" diameter and I see a max rpm of 6400 in 4th with a short box. Our events are at California Speedway, Willow Springs, Buttonwillow, Las Vegas and Pahrump. Required spring rate changes? Alignment settings vastly different? Are there different American Racer FV compounds? Our rules state American Racers, yet the supp regs for SFR specify a compound number....the McKay site doesn't list a choice of compounds.... ??

Daryl,
I havent driven the dunlops so i cant tell you the changes you need to make but i can answer some of your questions
Buttonwillow - i didnt need to run a long box. Hopefully others will chime in about other tracks.
Compounds - there are three 130, 131 and 132. If i recall correctly the spec tire in SF region is the 132. I have used the 130 (softer) for nationals but i'm not sure if they are still making them. I dont think they are making the 131s anymore either.
Spring changes - hard to tell without seeing your setup. You might assume that the taller dunlops are more compliant so going to a shorter AR would require a softer rear spring to give the same overall spring rate. I think the formula is 1/total spring rate = 1/wheel rate + 1/ tire spring rate. If you're interested I can double check the formula.
Lastly, Bob Martin of McCoys in modesto is the local dealer for the tires. he's a good guy and will have a lot of answers for you. Tell him Ian Sweeney sent you - 209 5215656
good luck Ian

Thanks for the info Ian. Right now I am in a tight points battle...I have no interest in changing classes until next season. Just trying to get some basic questions answered before I decide. I might save $1200/year on tires, but if it requires a whole revamp on my suspension, alignment, all the associated testing and a different transaxle I will probably stay on the dunlops.

Dayrl;
Some of us have been pondering running with VARA so I'm gonna send a few questions your way.
1) Do you guys run up North at all 2) The Dunlop/American racer thing is the differance between FV2 and FVX, right? 3) How many FVX cars to you guys drawing these days? 4) If a bunch of current Gen FVs showed up would we be pelted with Rocks and garbage?
Thanks
Marty

Marty, A1: Short answer is No, 2005 schedule Jan--Cal Speedway Feb--Pahrump (Spring Mountain) Mar--Las Vegas April--Willow May--Buttonwillow June--Willow Sept--Buttonwillow Oct--Las Vegas Dec--Willow 2) Almost in shorthand....FV is for generator and fan cars on Dunlops. No Zero Roll FV1 is no generator or fan, zero roll okay, on Dunlops FV2 is no generator or fan, zero roll okay, on American Racers FVX is for anyone who has a non-compliant motor or who is running on some other tires. They are for exhibition only (same run group), get zero points or awards. 3) We have 2 guys who occassionally run in FVX. We had 15 Vees last weekend, and there was another vintage race at California Speedway....where a handfull of the local vee guys ventured to the dark side and ran with them. For some reason they like California Speedway Roval more than Willow...We had 8 FV's, 4 FV1's, and 3 FV2's. 4) I am not sure what the current thinking is on the newer cars. You'd have to contact Pat Kneip (VARA Pres.) and/or Larry Whitemore (Class Rep.)....both email addresses on the vararacing.com website. I certainly wouldn't pelt you with rocks or garbage . Though, you probably won't have any competition other than amongst yourselves. On the vintage dunlops I appear to be anywhere from 4 to 7 seconds a lap slower in my D13 than the fastest of the National guys at the same tracks.

Very little is required to go to the American Racers. You'll find a short box will still work, we use them everywhere, although the oval section at Fontana may require some patience. You could go up in rear spring but it's not necessary. I know the tire issue has become difficult since the recaps are no longer made. Up North we are trying to find an alternative to the Dunlops. The Hoosiers are too tall for Sears. oops Infineon and the Dunlops don't last very long.

The last part confuses me...I am talking about a treaded Vintage Dunlop not a slick...are you talking about a Dunlop slick?

With a short box at Fontana I understand the rpm will be a bit high on the oval but you'll be perfect for the infield seciton. If you run the long box, you'll be fine on the oval but slower on the infield. I know which Dunlop you're talking about and it's the same treaded one some are running up North. The Hoosier vintage treaded tire is really tall.

Hello all,
I am back revisiting this thread. Do you guys/gals run the American Race Tires on 4" wheels or 4.5" ? If 4"'. what is your source for wheels?

You can use either. Most of us use 4 some use the 4.5. we got some 4's from Brian McCarthy about a year ago. You can ask him if he is still able to get them.
