well someone had to start a post here. anybody from the SOCAL area. Id love to get more involved with the sport while i build my car and then race it ;D Well since im talking about my car i might as well use this forum as a place to udate my progress. 1st off im not building a FV but i am building a F1st (unless after i talk to the rep for SOCAL he says i wont be able to race then my project will probably go on hold) Anyway today i started on the front beam and after carefull consideration and alot of looking at other F1st cars on the web I have decided to go with a radical new susspension system but this to could change after i do some geomitry testing but i am very excited if it works out like i think it will this weekend i will be welding the sub frame and hopefully i can get a friend with a digital camera so every one can see my car thanks for your time

I can only speak for San Francisco Region in regards to Formula First and riunning. The cars are not a recognized class and this you will be running as an FS (Formula Special). This mean you would run with Formula Mazdas, Formula Atlantics and Sports Racers. The Cars are NOT cleared to run in group 7 with the Vees, FBs and F500s.
As of today there is only one FST car on the West Coast that I know of, the M5 Kurt Lemay is building in Reno, and it is already sold to DRE and will run in CenDiv next season.
Wish I could talk you into running a Vee and coming up to play with us in SFR. If not good luck with your project and if you hear from anyone in Cal Club tell them about the board.

I applaud anyone who can take on the enormous task of building a car, so don't get me wrong when I say: I hope you know what you are getting into and what is involved. The Cal Club rep can not tell you whether or not you can race your car- only SCCA can make that decision. There is a homologation process that you have to go through- have you contacted SCCA? You are planning to build a car that will have no one to race against; and IF (big if) it does become a "regional class in the next few years - as I suspect it might, then your "radical " suspension may also be for naught as there will be specific rules- rules that have already begun to be formulated in the middle part of the country.
I'll ASSUME that you have a copy of the GCR so that if nothing else you can base the car on the current Vee rules.
Consider yourself a pioneer- but beware of the pitfalls ahead.

Well after talking with DerElf through E-Mail and Bill B. I think that my best bet is to buy a used FV and slowly convert it to a F1st when the time comes. OH Hell who am i kidding IM gonna build a F1st car and if i never get to race it with other F1st cars then ill just run it in TCRA because NO IM NOT A MECHANICAL ENGINEER but i have been studying on my own about chassis design and have helped fabricate for Red Dog Racing (Does porsche 914 conversions to V8's) and besides how many people in FV when it first started built there first car and had as much or less experience than i have isnt there anybody out there who wants to build there own car now? isnt there anyone out there who has built there own car. If i sound mad im not trying to im just trying to say that I CAN DO ANYTHING I PUT MY MIND TO! I want to build a good car not throw one together i want to race it and I need help I cant do it alone thats why i came to this forum and to the Interchange forum so anybody who has any input i will be more than happy to listen and as for Marty and Bill i thank you so much for the info and advise you have given.

it really depends on where you get your kicks - the engineering challenge of designing and building is enough for some, for others its the kick they get from pushing themselves on the track, for others again its the competitive aspect of going up against 40 crazed vee drivers. i chose vees because of the competitive aspect - there is no higher level of competition (maybe spec miata).
the great thing about the scca is that whatever your buzz you can get it there - so if you want to be the first guy on the west coast to race a ffirst then scca will accomodate you in Formula S. As Marty points out, on the west coast it tends to be dominated by very fast cars and they often run with atlantics so be prepared!
whatever route you take, you will spend huge amounts of money and even more time - so make sure you enjoy it!
