Well, we had another great appearance of a Formula First car at the Williow Spings International Raceway for SCCA CalClub Region Double Regional. Again, only Eric Boghossian was representing the class, running under FS (Formula Special). We were lucky enough to have the Chief Stuart switch Eric to the SRF group - SRFs run pretty much similar speed and times (a little faster) and offer a fun race. Originally we were supposed to run with the open wheel fomula cars, but since the experience at California Speedway (the Altantics are too fast and it's not much fun constantly checking your rear-view mirrow for them closing in and flying past you!), we disovered that runing with the SRF is much smarter and really makes for a good race. Ok, enough story - here are the cold hard facts:
Race #1 (Saturday) Total cars in group: 16 (14 SRF, 1 SGT-2 & 1 FS)
Eric Boghossian placed 1st (surprise, sirprise!) in his class
Overall he finished 13th with a best lap time of 1:40.650 (new track record for FS class)
Best lap for the rest of the cars - 1.35.333
Race #2 (Sunday) Total card in group: 15 (13 SRF, 1 SGT-2 & 1 FS)
Eric Boghossian placed 1st (again a shocker!) in his class
Overall he finished 13th with a best lap time of 1:39.562 (breaking his record from the day before)
Best lap for the rest of the cars - 1.35.310
For those of you who do not know - Eric is a novice driver and this was his first time on this track - so kudos to Eric! He really got a chance to experience the abilities of the car at this purpose build speed track. At the Saturday race the 3 leading card lapped him in the 9th lap, but in Sundays race, due to Erics very much improved performance and precise adjustments to tire pressure, car and driver did their best and managed to keep the leaders of the SRF group at bay, resulting in a completed 19 laps without one car passing him!
Overall we are happy with the results and mostly - excited that it looks like there will be 3 Formula First Cars entering the next SCCA CalClub regional race at Buttonwillow in May: Eric, Lou LeBlanc and another guy from Norther Califonia (Bob Sepulveda - if I am not mistaken). We are hoping to get more and more Formulas First entires as interest in the class increases, which seem to be what's going on with all the racers and spectators get a chance to see it in action.
I, personally got to play the role of a pit worker and it's really fun to that for a car that is easy to maintain. Hope to be able to get one for myself soon and show the boys how real women race !
Well, this is the news for now - I will try to keep you informed of what is going on out here on the West Coast as often as I can.
Stay tuned for the next eddition of CalClub FST news!
