July 2011 FF Newsletter
Bits and pieces, in no particular order. Enjoy....
1) REVISED CONTACT LIST: Added Will Gallaher, Doug Learned Jr and Sr, will be emailed separately.
2) NEWSLETTER RECIPIENTS: If you would like to have someone not already on the contact list receive this newsletter (like crew, support shop or sponsors) please let me know and I will add their email addresses to the list.
3)PACE CAR/PROCEDURAL WARNING: If you are in position to take the win but the race ends under pace car control DO NOT GO TO START/FINISH in your race car to pick up your flag and do a victory lap. You must follow the pace car into the paddock and you will not get a victory lap, though you can go pick up your flag on foot later. Jim Petrick (FV) and I found this out at the Memorial Day Laguna weekend. FC winner Michael Manning was close enough to the pace car and saw the frantic waving of the pace car passenger and pulled back into the line of cars entering the paddock so he avoided the talking-too Jim and I got. Sanctions could be loss of finishing position, depending on the mood of the stewards.
4) NEW FF BLOCKS: At Pegasusautoracing.com, $1200, free shipping, all machining except bores done, ready to hone and build. Link: www.pegasusautoracing.com/productdetails.asp?RecID=9127
5) HOOSIER R60A TIRE: The R60a is continuing to gain followers, Peter Nosler using them to great success (third place and a win in the two races at the last Laguna event) and Michael Bernstein and I have been using them for some time. A separate email will follow with details.
6) GOODYEAR R430 UPDATE: Peter Nosler and I are still trying to pin down Goodyear/Roger Krause as to our obligation to use up the existing stock of Goodyear 430 tire inventory. The issue is they have a ton of sets (maybe 50+) and they are aging in storage. I don't see any way we can use up all these tires within their lifetime with our dwindling numbers and an excellent higher-value alternative (Hoosier R60a). Bottom line is we are trying to get them to let us off the hook and also trying to get them to market the R430's in other areas, which they haven't done as of yet (in fact, according to Roger Krause, some dealers have been discouraging their use).
7) POSSIBLE NEW GOODYEAR HIGH-VALUE FF TIRE: Current plans call for Goodyear to test two new FF tires, a 475 (follow-on to the tires I and Jon Brandstad used last year in competition but with a different carcass construction) and a 255, a long-life replacement for the 160. Peter Nosler has generously donated track time at Thunderhill as well as a DB-6 for the test, and Keith Nunes has donated his time to drive. The tires are also being tested in other parts of the country. For you loyal Goodyear users this could mean a higher value tire to compete with the Hoosier R60a. It is already approved for use in our championship as at one time it was seen as the replacement for the R430. Report to follow the July 19th test.
8)TIRE PRESSURE GAUGE TESTING/CALIBRATION: Brandon Kraus of Roger Krause Racing has offered to calibrate your pressure gauge. They have a state-required electronic gauge that you can compare yours with.
9) JIM TURLEYS FIRST WIN: Though not a FF-specific item, congratulations are due Jim Turley for his first win in CF at the last Laguna race, joining fellow 2011 first time FF winner Scott Waraka (in the season opener).
10) DAVE JALEN'S DB-1 FOR SALE: Some may have heard/seen Dave Jalin's DB-1 is up for sale on Apexspeed ( www.apexspeed.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46468 ). Fear not, Dave is just looking at the possibility of a different FF, not getting out. A good thing, Dave is one of the guys to beat, so we want him to stay.
11) IN-CAR VIDEO FROM LAGUNA JUNE 24: Jon Brandstad holding me off for the whole race, great fun.
Anyone else have some in-car video they want to share? Post it on YouTube and send a link to everyone.
See you at Thunderhill
