FF Newsletter, September 2011
1) JON BRANDSTAD SWEEPS BOTH PACIFIC FORMULA F SUPER SERIES RACES AT INFINEON
Jon went up against the likes of Alex Schutte and John Robinson at the Pacific Formula F Super Series event at Infineon last weekend (Sept 25/26) and won both events. Excellent job Jon! Links to the stories of the races on eformulacarnews.com here:
First race: www.eformulacarnews.com/news_info.php?n=9855
Second race: www.eformulacarnews.com/news_info.php?n=9859
2) SUNOCO AWARDS AND THUNDERHILL REWARD$ FOR CF/FF AFTER FIRST RACE THIS WEEKEND
According to the acceptance letter CF/FF will have both the Sunoco Awards and Thunderhill Reward$ drawing after the first race at Laguna this weekend. $200 from Sunoco and $1000 (2X$500) from Thunderhill is on the line so be sure to sign up for the Sunoco program at registration before the race and have the proper Sunoco and Thunderhill stickers on your car. Money is money.
3) PROPOSED TIRE RULE CHANGES FOR NEXT YEAR:
At the last race at Infineon FF competitors were asked if they would support a tire rule dictating the use of the Hoosier R60a tire only and the removal of the tire marking rule and we got overwhelming support. This weekend we will be asking for signatures on a petition to that effect. The rule as it is presented on the petition:
"All Formula F cars will use Hoosier R60a tires to qualify and race. If the stewards declare a rain race, any tire may be used."
To clarify, this rule will eliminate the Goodyear R430, Goodyear R475 and American Racer tires from eligibility for the 2012 season as well as eliminate the tire marking rule. There will be no restrictions regarding the tire you use in a qualifying session or race other than it be a Hoosier R60a.
4) REGION-ONLY RULES MAKING PROCEDURE CLARIFICATION:
When asked about the procedure for making region-only rules Mike Smith explained: "This method of making adjustments is not part of the supps but rather how the Region Board has decided to gather input for making changes. It used to be done by one person, the Comp Director, but good or bad we've moved more toward gathering info on a broader basis. In most cases the Board is asking for member input for a decision, not a vote."
So your 'vote' (or petition signature) isn't actually a vote. It is an advisement of your position, member input to the board. Also, the board listens to not only the active participants in the seasons championship but also to those that have made it clear they wish to participate in the next season, even though they may not have participated in the current (or last) season.
5) HOOSIER TIRE INFO UPDATE:
I had a telephone conversation with Bruce Foss of Hoosier a few days ago and will be following this email with a summation of what I learned about the R60a. Please look for the email in your inbox, there is some important info in there, particularly about hot tire pressures, which Bruce recommended be 18/19 (front/rear). These pressures should reduce the wigglyness in transitions and make the front end bite even better on turn-in.
6) NEW FORMULA FORD:
A new Formula Ford: www.autoblog.com/2011/09/12/slick-2012-formula-ford-racer-debuts-in-frankfurt/ . Not relevant to us as the engine is turbocharged and makes 165hp, but interesting that Ford is picking up the ball in creating this new car.
7) TIM WISE, NEW TO OUR REGION:
Look for Tim Wise in the paddock and on the track at Laguna with his DB-6. He has taken a job with Google, moved to Santa Cruz (from Central Division I believe) and brought his Swift with him. You may recognize his name as he is a frequent poster on Apexspeed and is the brother of Dan Wise (Club Ford).
8) PAUL LUCA:
Paul Luca and his team did a great job at Infineon with his beautiful black Swift DB-1 in only his second race with us. He qualified 7th and finished 3rd in the first event, 8th and 6th respectively in the second race. Paul took the Russell Driving school mechanics course and participated in some of the Russell driving schools. Michael Bernstein spent some time driving against Paul on the track and described him as a "hard but fair competitor". Paul and his crew are very savvy mechanically and are a great addition to our class. Welcome Paul, Laura and Bob.
9) NEIL PORTER:
On a sad note, Neil Porters dad passed away recently. Our sincere condolences to Neil and his family. One way or another our regions Formula Ford group owes an enormous debt to Neil. His services, support, and willingness to help anyone with a problem has done much for our class.
