Gail passed away after a courageous battle with breast cancer on September 9th at home with her husband Jim at her side . She left behind her husband, Jim Petrek; her daughters, Sarah and Hannah.
Gail was born on April 15, 1950 in Chicago, Illinois to Edwin and Toby Spanier. She grew up traveling the country and aboard with her family to follow her father, math professor at numerous universities. She was a graduate of El Cerrito High and San Francisco State with a major in Education and a minor in Deviant Behavior.
Gail met Jim in 1980 where they worked together at Andros. She worked for many years as a teacher in the classroom and at their homes. She had many experiences in her life, including racing cars with her husband, being the first woman on the cover of Safety magazine, and training for body building contests. Her true passion was art, especially pastels and water color and created many portraits of her family and their pets.
Gail beat cancer 10 years ago and continued to be a source of support for other families battling the disease. Two years ago, she was rediagonsed with cancer and remained brave and iron-willed through her final days. She continued to support and care for her family through all of her battles.
Gail is survived by her husband, Jim Petrek; her daughters, Sarah and Hannah; her sister Rita and her husband Robert Wolenik; her brother Larry and his wife Christine Spanier; and her many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents.
Friends and family are invited to services on September 20 at 2:00pm at Beth Chaim Congregation at 1800 Holbrook Drive, Danville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to American Cancer Society at donate.cancer.org.
