According to the current Fastrac, all formula cars, including Vee's, will be required to have a deformable front crash structure on the car by 01-01-08. While they say that the current provisions in the Vee rules for the anti-intrusion plate will suffice, I think some cars don't have room for this new item without a change in overall length rule. Go to the SCCA web site in the garage site and check it out. It may be time for some letters.

Brian, I thought it read crush structures recommended for all formula cars and required for cars built AFTER 1986. Weren't most Vees built in the 1800's? I heard the original wheels came off of covered wagons. About the right width. And the same hp as a 20 mule team. dave (my car was built in 1985)

copied from ApexSpeed site:
Fastrack There's also a new rule mandating front crush structures on every formula car built after 1986. The rule also mandates the construction techniques used....I'll paraphrase some:
1. FIA approved structure (good luck with that). 2. 18 Gauge aluminum (with minimum sizing listed). 3. Composite honeycomb of carbon, glass or kevlar (also has sizing minimum).
I would guess most cars are already sporting some sort of structure, but I would guess that some don't or what they do have may not meet the requirements.
There's also a combination of FE and FM being considered....as well as combining DSR and CSR. Bold moves this month......

How is a F5 going to comply?

Dave, be nice about my precious.
Seems a FSCCA car got stuffed and the driver had to be cut out of the .065 wall frame with major foot and leg damage. Hence, the knee jerk reaction. Since SCCA has product liability as well as general safety issues, the reaction appears to be a case of overkill. Rumor has it that many of the late Van Dieman chassis are very questionable and may not pass muster. Word is that Enterprises has already started work on the upgrade.
My issue in vees is that we have a VW front end capable of absorbing tons of damage and substantial frames to protect the legs of the drivers. There are many vees, mine included, that don't have the room for a 42 sq.in. box. without new noses and a overall length rule change.

But, by adding this line:
"2. Formula Vee and other formula cars using the VW sedan H-beam front suspension may use the front crush structure specified in 9.1.1.C.3.a.12., or any of the structures listed in 1 above. "
aren't they specifically excluding FV's from any new requirement since our cars are already built to this spec and any new cars can still use this spec?

The front structure on a vee is only required if you have something sticking out further than 8 inches.

Confirmation of the FV clarification is in FASTRAC. Vees have no front structure requirement unless they have something 8" infront of the beam.

Does the 8" include the nose cone?

No, structure includes hard stuff like steering, master cylinders and frame rails.
