The second race for the Sf region is going to be at T-hill and the entry deadline is tomorrow Friday 4-9-04. I sent in my entry and am wondering who else is planning on being there? Remember there is a bonus race so you get two for one entry fee.

I am NOT a happy camper. I just found out yesterday that the rollbar on my Adams Aero does not meet specs and I need to have it replaced, so I will not be attending the Thunderhill race Tom

Tom;
How did you find out it doesn't meet specs and in what way?

Marty, I used up the last page of my logbook when attending school. So my plan was to go up Friday to the open test day and get reinspected and issued a new logbook, then go have fun! Brian (my mechanic Brian) and I thought it would be a good idea to check the rollbar "just in case" BEFORE going thru tech.
We found that yes, indeed, the rollbar did match the specs in the front of the logbook. When I went to double-check the GCRs to ensure my specs were in line with the rules, I found the GCR's said my rollbar needs to be 1.375, not the current 1.25.
Hoping that maybe somewhere there was an exemption for my Adams, I called SCCA Club Racing Tech Manager in Kansas City, however, my fears were validated. My roll bar does need to be 1.375.
I "assumed" that if the logbook showed my car was annualled year after year, that meant my car was legal...NOT!
This makes it difficult for the new guy as he can't just go by the logbook in determining if his car is legal or not. He has to be knowledgeable in the GCR's BEFORE buying a car and going though school.

Thanks Marty!
I have calmed down and am in the process of lining up the rollbar replacement for racing another day.

I think it's safe to say that at some point the car was legal. There were several Aeros with this configuration and homologation papers and logbooks were issued.
Generally speaking, all the details of the car are closely reviewed when a new logbook is issued. That's why it is required that a National Licensed scruitineer do the book replacement. It's very likely this car has not had the logbbook replaced since the roll bar requirements have been upgraded.
Car prep and legality are the responsibility of the competitor in partnership with Tech. As you know there's little time to do a detailed inspection on Saturday morning. That's one reason that annuals aren't usually done then.
I'll be at the upcoming race starting with Thursday night. As always, I will be available for inspections, annuals and additional complimentary inspections. A complimentary inspection is a "no harm, no foul" private consultation about your own car. I haven't memorized the GCR quite yet but am willing to be a resource for any vee competitor.
See ya there!

Tom,
is there any change you measured it incorrectly or at the wrong point?

Ian, I wish It is the same measurement as it says in the front of the logbook. If I knew when I bought the car what the measurement SHOULD be, I wouldn't have bought the car. At the time when the logbook was issued, 1.25" was legal and no one else (including me) noticed throughout the life of this particular logbook that the dimensions had been updated in the GCR's. I'm glad I didn't find out about this before school, or the car would be with another owner. The good news is that I DO like the car and am happy with the handling. Sooooo, it's replacement time Tom

Tom, oh well, welcome to motor racing while you're at it - check to make sure you have sufficient clearance between top of helmet and roll hoop. For some reason US vees seem to be marginal in most cases. GCR details the exact requirements. Ian

Ian, excellent advice! Even though I am only 5'7", I DO need to raise the rear hoop for the stick test. My Vee helmet is taller than my kart helmet. Or at least it seems that way. Now I'll probably be one of these guys that hound people to check their rollbar measurements before buying Tom
