When you send in your entry you will have to chose your number. You will be asked to chose up to 3 numbers. When it is accepted you will be told which number you will race with. This will give you at least 2 weeks before the race. If for some reason all the numbers you picked are being used they will assign a number to you for the race. They have it pretty well handled so you won't have to change numbers at the track.

By my count, 9 Vee's will get to keep their numbers including the fellow with the pointy hat. Superstitious? #13 is available... along with 30,31,34,36,37,38,39,43,45,54,57,58,60,62, etc.etc.etc. Tom, forget the stencils and paint. Racers tape works fine and will not take your paint off at the end of the weekend

I just signed up for my number yesterday (52). Pat McDowell will probably sign up for 51. Tom, since this will be your first full year in the Twilight Zone of racing classes, I think you'll find that car numbers will be the least of your worries.

I use contact paper, it's cheap and comes off really easy and won't hurt your paint. On the back side there's a matrix griding that makes drawing the numbers really easy.
You can paint a white square on the car and put the numbers in as needed. Just make sure you have a good contrast. I bought some nice yellow contact paper at Micheal's.

Permeant Number Update With the combining of groups 4 and 7, the number game has taken on a whole new meaning. As per Colleen @ SFR-SCCA, the final discussions will be made by the Board of SFR. I was told the priority will be as follows:
1) Highest Priority: A group 4 driver with the longest use of the requested number will be granted use of the number if s/he filed the permeant number request form on time and qualifies. If they did not use the number three times in 2004, they do not qualify for that number in 2005.
2) A group 7 driver will be granted the requested number OVER a group 4 driver if the group 7 driver has used the requested number longer in group 7 than the group 4 driver has used the requested number in group 4.
3) The earliest dated request for an unused number will have next level of priority (first come, fist served). These are the three number choice on the entry form that you fill out for each race.
4) Last: The staff will assign numbers based on what is available to all others.
NOTE: If you do not yet have a permeant number, you should enter the first three races ASAP and request the same number sequence on each entry form. Once you have completed three races with the same number, you may then request that number as YOUR permanent number. Then if you enter each race prior to the deadline, you will be assigned that number for future races.
Also note: The Board of SFR will have the final say with respect to the assigning of numbers.
This is not gospel. This may be subject to change. Rule 2 is going to be highly contested. But remember, you will know what number you will be using prior to the race as it will be included in your acceptance letter.
I would guess almost half of the permanent numbers in group 4 will NOT be reassigned due to the driver not meeting the three race minimum.
Hope this clarifies some points. dave jalen FF 50

Thanks Mike and all! The trouble is that I won't be running most races, so that means the possibility will be greater that I will have to change #'s from race to race.
My only care is the cost of #'s and the ease of removing without damaging the paint.
Brian, once again, I think you have the winner!
So on my brand new black paint, the contact paper won't hurt it??

Dave;
Welcome to the Left Coast board and does the phases of the moon have anything to do with that number assignment process?

THe permanent number list is now posted at SFRSCCA.com for our amusement. For anyone who was discomfitted by this, I apologize for the Region in advance. I asked the BOD for fairness, Dave appears to have done so also, and hopefully nobody was too married to their number. I gave up #3 to return to my former #37, now permanent in both CalClub and SFR. Some lucky FV driver got it I think.
As to making number changes, if you race enough it isn't an issue. If you don't race enough 2 things happen.
1) You never get a permanent number 2) You don't notice that the address label on your acceptance letter has you ASSIGNED number on it when you get it about a week BEFORE the event. (We DO read the acceptance letters, right? That's where the official schedule is as well as any changes to the Supps would be found.)
Good grief guys, even I can get a number cut in a week.
However, if you're time challenged, Target sells contact paper by the roll, and I have a full set of 8" plastic number templates in my trailer for use by anyone. You supply your own knife, I don't have liability insurance for that covers you.
See ya in a few weeks. Anybody going to Fontana this weekend?

Greg;
Blake and Dick Gordon are on their way to Fontana this weekend and Cal Club is thrilled! Apparently they have 7 Vees enetered, the most they have had in several years.
Anyone who is into this whole "thinking ahead" thing shoulc check out the Classified Section on the board here as I am running a special on Numbers this month!

I think anyone who is able to get the funds together for a run at Fontana should do it even if it's only once. A look at the track map will tell you it's an E-Ticket drive. Aside from that, the folks in CalClub are first rate, the PA doesn't get abused like up here, and you can actually listen to classical music whilst working on the cars.
The downside to running with CalClub is that you will run in the (real) race car group with FA/FM/FC/FF/CF/FV/S2/FS/CSR/DSR. Get's pretty wild at times. But we're real racers and we can deal with different cars and speeds right?

As of Feb.18, there are now 65 drivers with permanent numbers in group4. If everyone was to show up, along with those who do not have a permanent # what would happen? do the tracks or the SCCA have a limit on the number of cars on track?

The GCR limits the number of cars in a race group to 25 cars per mile of track, thus: Thunderhill - 75 cars, Laguna - 55, Sears Point (I still can't bring myself to call it Infinion) - 63. It's been a long time since we've had formula car fields like that.

Mack,
You are not alone in that Sears will always be Sears.
