I talked to the Honda guys and I was surprised to hear that SCCA did not want to seal the motor because it would cause hardship for the vendors. Nice to see a cost control idea get over-ridden by our leaders to protect the commercial interests. Guess the vendors are members too.
Unlike the First idea, new technology, with a sealed motor, could really reduce costs. According to respected engine builders, the newer the technology, the smaller the gains from blueprinting and tweaking. The $2500 Honda motors will soon follow the path of Spec Maita and others with costs quickly approaching and passing those of the Kent. I was surprised the conversion kit cost was so high. Right now, Quicksilver is a sole supplier.

i said it before and i'll keep saying it, even though my opinion matters about as much in scca as it does to the federal government: the motor was not the problem. the tires are the problem. my runoffs trip in '07 was a $20,000 expense for me.
"how much was engine expense, ethan?"
"$0" i say
"$0?" says you yes. i ran the motor that i had run all season long. now i know topeka wasn't a big hp track that elkhart is, but the fact is that my two biggest expenses were: 1. towing there and back and all that that entailed and 2. tires. i know i wasn't in the hunt for the win, but i think its safe to say i was definitely a contender for "best of the rest" honors, and an extra 1 or two hp wouldn't have made much difference. another set of donuts wouldve. but oh well. i'm thinking of having stickers made up for my car that will say "my ford runs like a honda"...
